About and method
Flood Claims Map presents FEMA's public National Flood Insurance Program data by county. We are independent and not affiliated with FEMA or any insurer.
Data
- Claims: every record in FEMA's redacted NFIP claims dataset (2,725,989 records, retrieved 29 October 2026). We count claims by the county code FEMA gives, by year of loss, and add building, contents and increased cost of compliance payments. A claim with no payment still counts as a claim.
- 74,623 claim records (2.74%) have no county code, a code outside the 50 states and DC (for example territories), or an Alaska code retired since the claim. We count claims under the old Wade Hampton code with Kusilvak Census Area, its renamed successor. These records count in national totals but not on any county page.
- Take-up: FEMA's residential penetration rates, which divide NFIP residential policies in force by residential structures, for the whole county and for the high-risk flood zone (Special Flood Hazard Area). We checked that every published rate equals the policy count divided by the structure count. In some counties FEMA counts more high-risk zone policies than high-risk zone homes, or no homes at all. We show those shares as n/a.
- Amounts are as reported, not adjusted for inflation.
Corrections
Tell us the page and the figure and we will check it against FEMA's data and correct it with a dated note. We never accept payment to change, add or remove anything.
